How to Remove Road Film and Grime From Car Paint
That gray-brown film that stays on a vehicle after rain or highway driving is more than loose dirt. Road film can combine traffic residue, dust, oils and seasonal contamination into a layer that normal rinsing may not remove.
Start With a Safer Wash Process
- Rinse away loose dirt first.
- Use an automotive wash product appropriate for the job and follow its directions.
- Work from cleaner upper panels toward dirtier lower panels.
- Use clean wash media and avoid grinding contamination across the paint.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean microfiber drying towel.
Pay Extra Attention to Lower Panels
Rocker panels, rear bumpers and the area behind the wheels often hold the heaviest road film. Give those areas fresh wash media instead of carrying that contamination back onto cleaner paint.
